He may be OP and a major Gary Stu in-universe, but that hasn't stopped Kirito from winning the best male character of 2014 category in the Newtype Anime Awards.
Ironically, Kirito took away the male category slot for his inclusion in Sword Art Online II, despite playing as a female-type avatar after his account encountered a bug. Despite still being male, the character for most of the Gun Gale Online arc looked awfully female to the audience and the in-universe characters.
Most of the other awards were scooped up by either Kill la Kill or THE IDOLM@STER Movie. A complete rundown of the category winners looks like:
